Akshay Mathure – The Cyclist Who Ran Toward Purpose Stories of Strength & Stride

It started with a nudge from a friend. Not a push, not a plan—just a casual introduction to a local run club by the woman who would later become his wife. At the time, Akshay Mathure was more familiar with long-distance cycling than pounding pavement on foot. But something about the rhythm of running—something about those quiet sunrise miles shared in community—clicked. And once it did, there was no looking back.

“I used to skip runs. Now, I build my life around them.”

In the early days, running felt like a struggle. Despite being a cyclist, Akshay quickly realized running demanded a different kind of endurance. “My bed often won the battle in the mornings,” he laughs, remembering how motivation often lost out to comfort. But he knew he needed consistency. So he signed up for 5Ks and 10Ks—not for glory, but for accountability. “Having a race on the calendar gave me a deadline and a reason to show up.”

What kept him going wasn’t just the thrill of race day—it was the steady encouragement of his wife, herself an elite runner, who challenged him to keep going when he felt like giving up. Her belief in him became his anchor.

The Balanced Grind

Today, Akshay’s week is a careful choreography of endurance, strength, and recovery. There’s a long run to stretch his limits, a speed session to build power, and an easy run to keep rhythm. Strength training comes in twice a week to build resilience. And then there’s yoga—three days of it—to keep the mind and body aligned.

“It’s not just about miles,” he says. “It’s about staying in sync with your body. Listening to it. Respecting it.”

Finding Meaning in the Miles

For Akshay, running has evolved into more than a sport—it’s a practice of purpose. On the days when fatigue tries to take over, he doesn’t rely on grit alone. He reminds himself why he started. “To challenge myself. To grow. To chase marathon goals.” Signing up for races continues to keep him focused, but it’s the personal growth—mental, emotional, spiritual—that fuels his journey.

“Every step counts. Even the hard ones.”

When asked what advice he’d give to beginners, Akshay’s answer is clear: be patient. Be consistent. Show up even when it’s hard. “Don’t worry about pace or distance at the start. Just get out there. Even a short run is a win.” He encourages new runners to take small steps—literally. “Sign up for smaller races. They give you momentum. Milestones. Motivation.”

And if you can, surround yourself with people who lift you up. That support, he believes, is priceless.

The 4-Hour Dream

For Akshay, the finish line isn’t just physical. His ultimate goal? A sub-4-hour marathon. But even more than the time, it’s about proving something to himself—that with discipline, belief, and heart, he can rise beyond his limits. He dreams of someday running iconic international marathons—Berlin, New York—joining thousands of others in a collective celebration of effort and endurance.

The Sorgen Shift

As his training intensified, Akshay began searching for ways to improve his recovery. That’s when he discovered Sorgen Compression. “I kept seeing their name pop up in recovery recommendations,” he recalls. After trying the Sorgen compression calf sleeves on a long run, the difference was immediate. “They were snug but not tight, supportive without restriction. My legs felt fresher, and soreness reduced significantly. That’s when I knew—they’d be a permanent part of my training gear.”

Now, on long runs or high-effort training days, Akshay reaches for his Sorgen sleeves without a second thought. “They just work,” he says simply.

One Step at a Time

If his life were a movie, Akshay says it would be called “One Step at a Time.” Because that’s how he’s approached everything—from his first run, to every grueling training day, to chasing big marathon goals. “Nothing happened overnight,” he says. “It’s all been about small efforts, skipped snooze buttons, and just showing up.”

In running, Akshay found more than a sport. He found strength, community, resilience—and a way to discover what he’s truly capable of.
